Spiny Lobster - Southern California

Meet… CA Spiny Lobster.

Live California Spiny Lobster are caught by the Saraspe family off the coast of San Diego. They are harvested in traps by experienced licensed fishermen. This specie of lobster does not have claws, like their East coast counterpart. California Spiny Lobster have a significantly larger yield of meat in their tails than Maine lobsters. The meat is much sweeter and more tender than East coast lobster. The fishery is regulated by length of lobster, gear types, and permitting. This harvest method produce minimal bycatch and habitat impacts leading the California Spiny lobster to be a “Best Choice” by Marine Stewardship Council. Please note: This product may take extra time to arrive due to fishing availability from our fishermen.

Whole | Sold in 2 or 3 count quantities (Lobster is priced per piece in varying sizes and fluctuates with the market. Each lobster is roughly 1.20-1.50 pounds, but vary in size. This ain't baking cakes!). WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT LOBSTERS WILL ARRIVE ALIVE. Not to worry, these are still delicious to eat if they died in transit.

Saraspe Seafoods

The Saraspe family has been servicing the San Diego area since the early ‘50s. The family’s fleet was established in 1952 when Lauro Saraspe built his first skiff. Unlike the average college student, he fished the early mornings before class and would drive around selling that morning’s catch to restaurants and wholesalers at lunchtime. He was one of the first fishermen in San Diego to supply Chesapeake Fish Co. and Anthony’s Fish Grotto.

Great for ordering for family that cannot get fresh seafood. I got it for my aunt and grandpa to try out the spiny lobsters. They said it was delicious. Very fresh. Would order again.

Excellent! Cut in half. Cooked on the grill, laced with Scotch whiskey.

As a French, I am a great fan of spiny lobster, aka langouste, that I place quite above lobster in my own hierarchy of value. So, I was thrilled to have, at least, the possibility to find langoustes in the US. Of course, living in Ohio, the spiny lobsters were not to be compared to fresh ones out of a tank on the seaside. They were excellent though. As I got two, I cooked them two ways: gently steamed "à la nage" with vegetables (baby artichokes, fennels, turnips...) cooked the same way and the cooking juice (the "nage") enriched and thickened by the water rendered by the lobster, and simply grilled on the BBQ with corn, regularly basted, and served, with a sauce chien, a French Carribean specialty sauce where garlic, parsley, chili pepper... infused in lime juice and hot water

Great care instructions from the harvester, made preparing these lobsters less daunting! Super fresh and well packed.
