Box Crab - Southern California

The box crabs arrived full of spunk and vinegar, ready to throw fists at anyone within range, but a gentle tap over the eyes and they tucked right up into box formation. They were packed very well with soft bouncy padding and cooling ice gel packs, and some moist paper towel to keep the humidity up. A+ crab packaging. There was an issue with weather, a string of storms keeping the boats away from crabbing for a bit, but the staff cheerfully kept me up to date and informed. Eventually they pulled through and brought in these two DELICIOUS crabs. Ten minutes in the steamer and they were perfect. Flavor is very similar to king crab, and the shells are so THIN that you can peel them like an egg. No tools required. Nice thick cluster portions and chunky legs and claws, well worth giving them a try.

All 4 arrived fresh and alive. Truly the sweetest crabs I’ve ever tasted.

They were great. Unfortunately two of the 4 were dead.

This was my first experience with box crab. Saw an episode on Food Network so I decided to use E Fish to order two crabs. Very pleased with E Fish and the taste of the box crabs.

I had a lot of issues with my order. First, it was supposed to arrive by Christmas, then new year, then we finally agreed 1/4 because of supply. The first time I ordered box crabs, it came 2 days late because UPS missed the Sat delivery and they do not open on Sunday, which means they died a day ago. The customer service was great in that they resent it next week on Wed. When I opened it, one was dead and the other was alive. The dead one ended up mushy, but the live one was great! Overall, e-fish helped all they could have, but my overall end experience was subpar since one box crab costing $50 wasn't great. I understand that there's also cost for e-fish to support this transaction.

Quick shipping perfect live crabs!

Never had these before and it was a great experience! One of the two crabs died en route but because it’s shipped right off the boat, it didn’t taste much different from the live one. The live one was still quite a fighter! Meat tastes like a cross between Dungeness and king crab. The shells are not very hard and easy to peel.

Crab came just in time, very lively

These crabs were the best flavored crabs I’ve ever had. They have a natural sweet buttery taste. As big as the bodies are, there isn’t much meat there, it’s more in the legs. Fantastic flavor…but definitely for a super special occasion.

Fantastic experience trying these for the first time. Very delicious and easy to cook and clean. Packed very well and arrived cold and fresh.

Sweet, tender and delicious. Only problem is they might be off season because the crab shell are soft and the meat was too soft. I’ve heard moon cycle have something to do with the way crab molt and shed their skin which make them soft. Would definitely try it again because the taste and aroma is delicious.

The Crabs were Sweet in flavor. Most definitely next to King crab.

We first had box crab at the seafood spot on the pier in Santa Barbara. Last time we went through, they didn’t have it. It is by far the sweetest most succulent crab we’ve ever tasted. So, when we found out we could have it delivered to our front door and enjoy it in the comfort of our own home at roughly the same price as the restaurant, it was a no brainer. You should be slightly flexible on your delivery dates as availability is subject to the fishermen’s ability to harvest, but communication and service is on point. Steam it for 12 1/2 minutes, serve it with clarified butter and enjoy.

Ordered 4 crabs and they all arrived alive and well. Solid sized and super delicious. The same day I received them I boiled the 4 in a large pot for somewhere between 18 and 20 mins from a warm water start. I started timing a bit after I put them in so not sure of the exact time.

The crab meat was so sweet. We had never tried the box crab before, but will definitely be ordering it again. Thank you for you wonderful customer service.

When they first showed up , I thought one of them was dead because he had a big crack in his back. But once I got a mound of the box and he warmed up, he started moving.

The box crabs were alive, fresh and delicious. They tasted very much like King Crab. That’s the good. Not so good is their size was small. From the description I was expecting something approaching the size of Dungeness. The amount of meat per crab was probably less than a third that of a Dungeness for roughly the same price, and the picking was not near as easy. And I like the flavor of Dungeness much more. Finally, for my taste, the best deal in crab is fresh picked blue crab meat from Alabama.

Both arrived alive, I was pleasantly surprised that the shell was soft like a king crab and it tasted similarly as well. Very good!

The crabs arrived very much alive and I cooked them in salty water right away. I did like the taste of the meat very much, almost like a blue crab in the sweetness and texture. There just isnt a lot of meat in the crabs except for the legs and claws, the body, unlike a dungeness crab has very little to eat. I did like it, but prefer dungeness crab as far as taste and how much crabmeat is in the legs and body. But not unhappy with my order

I waited about 3 - 4 years for these crabs to be available! Finally got a text saying they were finally available so I immediately placed my order. They arrived well packaged in a nice refrigerated box. Both crabs were exactly as shown on the website and lively. They were probably the sweetest crab I ever tasted.

NOT SO GOOD, PACKAGE ARRIVED ON WEDNESDAY AND I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE PLASTIC BAG OUT OF THE SHIPPING BOX AND PLACED IT IN MY WALK-IN COOLER. ON FRIDAY MORNING I REMOVED IT TO PREPARE HOWEVER IT WAS ROTTEN AND STUNK REALLY BAD.

Grabs were health and happy. They were the sweetest crab I’ve ever eaten. Even tastier than Dungeness!

I ordered 2 brown box crabs. They arrived quickly and were as described. Alive and moving. I prepared them as instructed and they are amazing. I have never tasted anything like them. They are unlike any other crab I have eaten. Sweet and buttery. A delicacy, to be sure. They are, however, very expensive. Not something I will be able to order very often but when I really deserve a treat, this will be on the short list. Price is not a complaint, just an observation. The crab was excellent and the service as well.

One of the best on line experiences ever. Arrived on time and fresh. Box crabs were great. Unusual…..but great. As was the bisque I made afterwords.

I'm not sure why, but once I placed my order, it seemed like you all forgot I has signed up for texts, since I didn't receive any for my order. This became important when my shipment was delivered because I wasn't home when it arrived. I was expecting an afternoon delivery from UPS (who did not message me either) and thought when I saw the doorbell cam thought my afternoon expected delivery cam early. It was a very humid Florida day and I got home probably close to 2 hours after it arrived. When I got home is when I discovered it was my crabs. I waited several months for these to come in season and since my favorite crab (Dungeness) is also from the Pacific, it would be a similarly delightful experience. I cooked them both and they were each about a pound and a half, neither had any backfin meat to speak of and the leg and claw meat was also not very substantial. I expected to get 4 lbs and received 3.3 (I don't know if that included the packaing material). I also expected to be "wowed" since I am a new customer, but I did not even receive the 10% discount I should have for signing up for email and SMS. I like to try new things and the videos I have seen of brown box crab consumption made me think it was going to be memorable in a good way. I am very disappointed and probably won't do business with E fish again unless my review creates some new interest in me being a customer that I have yet to see.

I had waited for almost 2 years to be able to order Brown (Box) crab. I was starting to think I would never get to taste one. But then, someone at E-Fish sent me a text telling me that you had found some. The wait was worth every day ! OMG, these are truly the best tasting, most succulent crabs I have ever had. King Crab comes in a distant 2nd, Dungeness and Blue crabs aren't even in the game. I do realize that by writing this review that I am creating my own problem, because when people read this they too will want some, making it harder for me to get more. se la vie. Thank you E-Fish folks, you made our 31st anniversary quite special.

I received the prowls and the box crabs in record time ! The crabs are still alive in the Frigidaire ! The prowl ( were all still alive ). are the most fresh and sweet I ever eat .

The crabs arrived alive which is a super bonus point. Although they were spikey, they were very easy to open. The taste was sweet and buttery. The products and service at e-fish is definitely superior.
